Der Verode ist eine Pflanze von den Kanarischen Inseln, bekannt für ihr aufrechtes, verzweigtes Erscheinungsbild. Sie gehört zur Familie der Korbblütler (Asteraceae) und kann bis zu 3 Meter hoch werden. Ihre Stängel sind grün, zylindrisch und recht dick, mit einer fleischigen Textur, die Wasser speichert, um Trockenheit zu überstehen.
Meist hat sie keine sichtbaren Blätter, oder diese sind sehr klein und kurzlebig. Im Frühling bildet der Verode kleine, gelbe Blüten, die in endständigen Blütenständen angeordnet sind und viele Bestäuber anziehen.
